The first question you ask yourself is... what can a nanny do for my family?
Duties that a nanny might perform for your children are:
- Giving baths,
- Changing diapers,
- Potty training,
- Dressing,
- Planning and preparing nutritious meals and snacks,
- Creating and maintaining a schedule,
- Organizing activities and play dates.
A nanny is also responsible for any domestic tasks related to childcare, including laundry, keeping toys clean and organized, and cleaning up any messes. Other household duties such as grocery shopping, errands or starting dinner may be performed if those duties are part of the agreement. They do not do housecleaning, and families should plan on employing separate housekeeping services.
But whatever duties a nanny performs, it should always be clear that the care of the children comes first.
The second question is... how do I find a permanent nanny and when should I start the search?
Before you begin your search, give yourself time to adjust to being a parent, to be comfortably home from the hospital and to get to know your baby before seeking a nanny. You might completely change your mind about what you are looking for in a childcare provider, when you'll go back to work, or about going back to work at all. Families who do decide they need ongoing, long-term childcare for a year or more choose a permanent nanny. Our permanent nannies work between 36 and 55 hours per week and are usually paid between $450 and $700 per week.
The pay for a nanny depends on several factors:
- the experience and education of the candidate,
- the hours your nanny will work, and
- the number of children you have.
There is no exact pay scale. We evaluate the pay expectations and requirements of candidates when they are interviewed. If candidates don't have realistic expectations, we will not work with them.
Every candidate has a different work history and education, so we suggest families keep a pay range in mind. The agency can guide you on designing an appropriate offer for a particular candidate.
Nannies seek situations where they will be treated as a professional. A family employing a nanny is responsible for both the employer and nanny portion of all taxes and withholding. Families with permanent nannies should also consider offering many of the benefits they have at their place of work: paid time off, health insurance, etc. There are affordable group and individual plans available to nannies, and we are happy to refer you to insurance agents that have experience with nannies.
We refer all tax related issues to Breedlove and Associates. They are experts in domestic employment taxes and provide a wide variety of services to assist families in this area. For more information on Breedlove and Associates, click here.
As with any pay package, it should encourage the nanny to stay with a family for a long period of time. We are happy to work with families in designing an employment agreement that meets both the needs of your family and your nanny.
Start the relationship right with your nanny by working through all the terms of your employment agreement prior to the starting date. Part of your agreement should include scheduled times to sit down and discuss how things are going. Make time in each day to transition your children into and out of the nanny's care. Deal with any issues openly as they arise before things get out of hand. Nannies do a difficult and very important job with little adult contact. Any opportunity you have to show your appreciation for what they do for your family often goes a very long way.

Our fee for a permanent placement is 10% of the first year's gross wages.
For example: the fee for a permanent nanny paid $550 per week is $2,860, $550 X 52 weeks = $28,600 X 10% = $2,860.
We offer a 90-day replacement guarantee. For the first 30 days, you can choose either a replacement nanny or a refund (less 25% of gross wages paid).
